Oak Hill schools will be closed March 27 - April 1
Classes resume Tuesday, April 2

OVBfinance dec14Oak Hill students in Information Technology, Vocational Agriculture and Family and Consumer Science classes attended a personal finance workshop sponsored by the Ohio Valley Bank. Hope Roush, Financial Education Leader for OVB, gave students a variety of financial tips.

Students learned that their credit score is a cumulative number representing what you have done in the world of finance. Bill payment history, outstanding debt, and credit available are calculated in your credit score.  Young people can build a good credit history by opening a checking or saving account. Also having a credit card and keeping it paid off every month will start a positive credit history. Your record of paying bills on time versus making late payments influences your credit report. Employers, banks, and landlords may look at your credit history.

Ms. Roush concluded the presentation with additional tips to manage debt responsibly. Being aware of your debt, paying bills on time, keeping accurate financial records and protecting your personal information will get students off to a great start to financial responsibility.

This educational workshop will be followed by the Ohio Extension Service program Real World Real Money. In this program students will participate in a mock bill paying experience. Individuals will have a job, regular pay check and family responsibilities. Then participants make typical monthly purchases for their family. Students may discover the hard reality that “money coming in” does not always equal “money going out” for expenses.  Career Tech students will welcome Erin Dailey, 4-H Consultant for Real World Real Money.

Special thanks to Mrs. Tammy Roush for arranging these financial events. Other teachers participating were Mrs. Hamilton and Mr. Bennett.
